Our First Five Years in Business

Leigh Edmondson

On 4th November, we held our annual conference a cornerstone event for Construction North Group (CNG). This day is always special because it gives me the opportunity to bring the entire team together, celebrate our achievements, and share the vision for the year ahead. This year was particularly significant as we marked the start of Year 6 of our journey.

Dining Room

When I look back, it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come. CNG was born during a global pandemic, from my dining room, without even being able to open a bank account. Fast forward five years, and we’ve just closed our fifth year with record sales and the strongest order book we’ve ever had heading into a new financial year. This reflection became even more real for me recently when I took on the task of redesigning and writing the content for our new website. What started as a daunting job turned into a therapeutic experience reminding me of the incredible progress we’ve made.

Five Years of Growth and Transformation

In just five years, we’ve evolved from a start-up into a dynamic main contractor capable of delivering projects up to £10 million in value across four key sectors: industrial, commercial, retail, and education.

Here are some of the milestones that define our journey:

Five offices over the years, culminating in our new HQ a truly inspiring place to work.

Culture building: Now a team of 28, we’ve worked hard to create a strong, aligned team, and while we’ve had to part ways with some who didn’t share our vision, we’ve also recruited exceptional talent from tier-one businesses a testament to our reputation.

Strategic expansion: Brought MEP in-house, added Joinery in-house, launched a Facilities Management division, introduced a Bathing division to assist the elderly with walk-in showers and wet rooms, established a manufacturing facility and showroom in Bingley, capable of producing bespoke joinery products.

At our core, we remain a construction and fit-out main contractor, but these additions have strengthened our ability to deliver projects with greater control, quality, and efficiency.

Projects that define us

Our reputation is built on delivering complex projects on time and on budget.

Recent highlights include:

The Big 555 Project in Leeds: A 550,000 sq. ft. industrial space repurposed on a fast-track program.

Headingley Stadium: Transforming cricket nets for Yorkshire County Cricket and the ECB.

Wayfair Distribution Centre: A brand-new fit-out for their Leeds facility.

Appleton Academy: Installing 536 PV panels, our first venture into solar, delivered successfully.

Each of these projects reflects our commitment to excellence and the trust our clients place in us.

Passion beyond Construction

At CNG, we believe in giving back and supporting passions beyond the workplace. Sport is a big part of our culture, and we proudly sponsor nine sporting initiatives, including

Football: Academy One, Bradford City Women, Bingley Juniors

Cricket: Harden CC, Cricket School, Freddie Padgett

Rugby: Yorkshire Rugby Academy, Bees Academy, Keighley Albion

Plus, we’ve supported Rhiannon Dixon in boxing, hosted our first annual golf day, and are gearing up for our second Grand Prix experience as a team.

These partnerships reflect our values of teamwork, resilience, and community.

Our Commitment to Community and Charity

Over the past year, we’ve strengthened our charitable commitments and formed partnerships that reflect our values of care and community.

We’ve recently signed a partnership with the Holly House Charitable Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable individuals and families. Alongside this, we continue our long-standing commitment to Age UK, helping improve the lives of older people in our communities.

Our team has also rallied behind causes close to our hearts, raising funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) a charity that does incredible work supporting those affected by MND. And looking ahead, we’re excited about the prospect of partnering with a very well-known dogs charity.

These initiatives aren’t just side projects they’re part of who we are. They remind us that while we build spaces, we also have a responsibility to build hope and opportunity for those who need it most.

Our Objective and Strategy

Our objective remains clear: to be a safe, sustainable, and profitable business, delivering projects up to £10 million in value.

We achieve this through:

In-house delivery of MEP and Joinery

Strong ESG commitments

A relentless focus on people, our team, customers, and suppliers.

Because at the end of the day, it’s all about people.

Our Team: Our greatest asset, spread across three departments: Preconstruction led by Adam Tucker, Commercial led by Scott Wadsworth and Operations led by Rob Padgett

Our Customers: We’ve worked with outstanding clients and some challenging ones but every experience has taught us valuable lessons in the pursuit of quality project delivery.

Our Suppliers: The lifeblood of our business and the reason we started CNG. We treat them fairly and engage strategically because they are an extension of our team.

Setting the Standard: 45/45 on Considerate Constructors

One of the proudest moments of was winning our first award for achieving a perfect score of 45/45 on the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

This isn’t just a number it’s a reflection of our commitment to excellence in every aspect of our work: respecting communities, caring for the environment, and prioritizing safety and wellbeing on site.

This achievement speaks volumes about how far we’ve come. It validates the culture we’ve built, the processes we’ve refined, and the dedication of our team to go above and beyond industry standards.

This score isn’t just a badge of honour, it’s a benchmark for how we intend to operate moving forward: responsibly, sustainably, and with integrity at the heart of everything we do.

Looking Ahead to Year 6

As we enter Year 6, we do so on a solid foundation with exciting projects in the pipeline for key customers. Main contracting is never easy, it’s a challenging sector with plenty of bumps in the road. But it’s also full of opportunities: apprenticeships, new careers, new divisions, and the chance to build something truly special by doing a good job, in good spirits for repeat customers whilst maintaining incredibly high standards in safety, quality and performance.

Personally, I’m grateful for the ability to work on the business, not just in it, thanks to the incredible team we’ve built. I’m sure new challenges lie ahead, this is construction, after all but if we stay true to our objective of being safe, sustainable, and profitable, I look forward to writing many more articles like this in the future.
